Georges Bizet (1835 – 1875)

Convocation Hall, Theological Hall, Kingston

A refreshing & colourful 60’s rendition of Bizet’s sublime original. QSOC’s Carmen is an original student-run production and the most elaborate in the company’s decade-long history.

Carmen is set against the background of the emerging counter culture of the 1970…s. Don José, a straight-edged man falls in love with Carmen, a free spirit. He abandons his home and his girlfriend and joins Carmen’s exciting world. However, he finds that Carmen cannot be caged and will not commit to him alone. Don José grows jealous of Carmen flirtations with Escamilio, and demands that Carmen commit to him alone – something which she cannot do.
